If one were to ask consumers what interior design was, there would be many varied answers. If you ask an interior designer, it's an art.

Fashion follows art, and interior design typically follows fashion. Like both fashion and art, interior design has style, form, texture, color, pattern, lines, and mass. Designers use light, materials, proportions, scale, emphasis, and balance to shape spaces that are beautiful, as well as functional.

Many clients are unsure of where, or how to start their new design project, and don't know what to do to get started. One of the best ways to get an idea of what you want is to buy home design magazines. Lots of them. Cut out pictures of things you like. These things could be products, color schemes, or even the overall feel of a room shown. By doing this alone you have helped to narrow down your style. There are four main design styles: traditional, contemporary, transitional, and eclectic. Within these four there are many more terms that can further break down your style, but it is best to start with the basics.

Traditional Design pulls from our past and brings a feeling of formality and history into our homes. There are many types of styles that fall under the traditional category, but all are considered of historic origin from America and Europe. These styles usually match the period from which they came: Victorian, Baroque, Queen Anne, Sheraton, and Louis XIV are all examples of historic themes.

Contemporary Design sparks an exciting feeling of change, and is characteristic of present day movements in style. Clean lines, fluid shapes, graphic motifs, and modern materials like acrylic and plywood are common materials, as are glass, stone, and metals. Minimalist and Zen styles are two of the themes that are associated with contemporary design.

Transitional Design is usually a combination of traditional and contemporary design, for those clients who want a more modern touch and less formality, yet still want the clean lines of contemporary styling to create a sophisticated and warm look. It gives consumers a chance to blend their traditional furnishings or home style with more modern designs without requiring a complete remodel of the space.

Eclectic Design can be a hard style to define and create, because it can be a mish-mash of various collections and furnishings the client may have and love, or it may be the whim of an eccentric artistic client that has a look in mind that is unique to their personality. This can also be a great style for newly weds who are trying to integrate their furnishings into one space.
If you have, or plan to have children, stairs can be a main concern. Having one less worry is highly desired by parents, which is why many choose to build a single story home in order to avoid having an accident take place. Older adults who see stairs as a hassle usually prefer having every room on the same story to make moving from room to room easier and safer. If safety is a main concern, one story homes are easier for a family to vacate in the event of a fire.

For those that are trying to help the planet and choose green methods, there are many different techniques that can be used with single family houses. Not only will you be reducing the toxins in the atmosphere, you will also be giving your friends and family a healthier setting. In addition to helping the environment, you will also be saving money on bills by using better construction methods.

You are finally there - you've made it! It's time for you to get the house of your dreams. That big binder filled with magazine clippings - a collage of colors, textures and designs - can finally be put into a cohesive custom home design just for you.
